In soils, fungal diversity is vast and despite being a foundation for all life on land, many of these organisms remain under-explored or sometimes even ignored. During this presentation, Dr. Korena Mafune will take you on a fungi-filled educational journey to learn about the importance of these organisms, their role in ecosystem health, and how they may play a crucial role high up in the tree canopies in Washington's old-growth temperate rainforests.

About Dr. Korena Mafune:
Dr. Korena Mafune is currently a Washington Research Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow conducting research on bacterial-fungal-plant interactions at the University of Washington. Her expertise focuses widely on how soil fungi, particularly plant beneficial mycorrhizal fungi, interact with other organisms in their environments, how these interactions drive soil processes, and how they can be harnessed for ecosystem conservation and sustainable soil practices. Dr. Mafune received her PhD from the University of Washington's School of Environmental and Forest Science, where she studied plant-fungal interactions in canopy soils (thick mats of organic matter on tree branches) of Washington's old-growth forests. Her background skills also include ecosystem restoration, environmental horticulture, and bioinformatics. Being born and raised in Washington, Dr. Mafune has a deep passion for the ecosystems she grew up around, and is a strong advocate for science communication and mentorship across diverse communities.
